GI Joe action figures from the 1960s are considered the original and iconic versions of this popular toy line. Launched by Hasbro in 1964, GI Joe revolutionized the action figure industry and became a cultural phenomenon. Here’s what you should know about the GI Joe action figures from the 1960s:

  1. Concept and Design: The concept of GI Joe action figures was inspired by the military and aimed to provide a realistic representation of soldiers. The initial figures were 12 inches tall, which was larger than most other toys at the time. The design featured articulated joints, allowing for poseability and movement.
  2. “Action Soldier” and Expansion: The first GI Joe action figure released in 1964 was called the “Action Soldier.” It was followed by the “Action Sailor” and “Action Marine” in subsequent years. These figures represented different branches of the military and came with various uniforms, accessories, and equipment. The line expanded to include vehicles, playsets, and additional soldier figures, such as medics, paratroopers, and special forces.
  3. Accessories and Equipment: The GI Joe action figures were known for their extensive range of accessories and equipment, which added to the playability and realism. The figures came with items like helmets, boots, weapons (rifles, pistols, grenades), backpacks, canteens, and more. The accessories were designed to be interchangeable between figures and often featured intricate details.
  4. Packaging and Marketing: The original GI Joe figures were sold in rectangular boxes with colorful artwork depicting the action figure and its accessories. The packaging often included images of the military-themed playsets and vehicles available separately. The marketing campaign for GI Joe emphasized the idea of “realistic action” and positioned the toy as a way for children to engage in imaginative military play.
  5. Popularity and Legacy: The GI Joe action figures from the 1960s gained immense popularity and became one of the best-selling toys of the decade. They were successful due to their high-quality design, attention to detail, and the ability to create immersive play experiences. The success of the 1960s GI Joe line laid the foundation for the enduring franchise, which has seen various reinventions and adaptations over the years.

In the 1980s, Hasbro reintroduced the GI Joe toy line with a new series of smaller, 3.75-inch figures, commonly known as “A Real American Hero.” These figures featured a different design and storyline, but the 1960s GI Joe line remains a nostalgic and cherished part of toy collecting history.
